Teeth whitening is a simple, cost effective way to boost the appearance of your smile
When asked about how they feel about their smile, many people tell us they would like their teeth to look whiter and brighter. Today with numerous teeth whitening options, this is not only possible but in most instances relatively easy. As we grow older, our teeth naturally darken. This happens because the natural enamel wears down, showing more of the yellowish underlying dentin. Smoking or tea and coffee drinking can also increase this darkening.
Teeth whitening is a popular. non-invasive treatment that can enhance the appearance of your smile. Improvements can often be made in as little as one hour. Or you can choose the take home method if you are more concerned about cost and less about time.
How safe is teeth whitening?
The safe and effective methods of tooth whitening use a carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide bleaching agent that is placed on the teeth.
This is important to note because there are over the counter whitening systems that use an acid pre-rinse and a whitening paste of titanium dioxide. While these can produce immediate whitening effects, they are dangerous and harmful for your teeth. They work by using the acid to erode a thin layer of the tooth enamel leaving a rough surface. The titanium dioxide (white paint) then fills the voids in the roughness. The effect is temporary and continual use can damage your teeth to the point where restorations are required.
To be sure you are using a safe teeth whitening treatment, look at the active ingredients before deciding on an off the shelf system. If it contains citric acid or titanium dioxide, we recommend putting it back. Better yet, discuss your teeth whitening strategy with your Red Deer dentist, Dr Sandhu or Dr Saby, before you start.
Which teeth whitening method is best?
While over the counter teeth whitening treatments are popular, they are not the most effective because they use a weaker bleaching agent. When you whiten your teeth under the supervision of Dr Saby, you can get better results.
Ultimately, the choice of tooth whitening systems comes down to your decision on how much time and effort you want to invest. The more technology and dental chair time required the more expensive the procedure will likely be.
1. Do it in one day
If you want immediate results with no effort on your part, a chair-side whitening procedure could be for you. Called accelerated whitening, this process can result in whiter, brighter teeth in just one office visit. How does it work?
Your teeth are isolated and a whitening gel is placed on your teeth. An activating light is positioned to help the whitening solution remove stains and discolouration. The gel is freshened every 15 minutes and in as little as one hour you may have a whiter brighter smile.
2. Or do it at home
If you want the results, do not mind some inconvenience and want to save some money, home whitening may be best for you.
The take home system uses custom made whitening trays and whitening gel you use at home. It takes a little more effort and time on your part, but it’s very effective. The plastic whitening trays are made from models of your teeth. In them you’ll place a special whitening gel to wear for several hours per day. Many choose to wear their trays in the evening after dinner. This method may take a week or two to see results.

The success of your teeth whitening treatment depends on the current state of your oral health. Some dental restorations don’t bleach well, and, while most teeth whitening treatments are safe and effective, you’ll have the most success if you address any oral health concerns before you start.
